Opened in 2018 and still expanding, Istanbul Airport (İGA) replaced Atatürk Airport as Turkey's primary gateway. It's already one of the planet's busiest hubs — and one of its most beautiful.
All international and domestic flights operate under one vast roof — connecting gates and lounges are easier to reach than at airports spread across multiple terminals.

The terminal's food hall is a showcase of authentic Turkish flavors — from simit bakeries to full meyhane-style restaurants. Don't leave without eating something local.
Freshly carved döner wrapped in lavash or a crispy tantuni roll — the ultimate fast layover meal you won't find this good back home.
Double-stacked çay brewed strong and served in tulip glasses. Or try a frothy, thick Turkish coffee — a ritual here, not just a beverage.
Grab a sesame-crusted simit or a flaky börek filled with cheese or spinach from one of the bakery stalls — Istanbul's beloved street snacks, airside.
Güllüoğlu has a counter in the terminal — pick up pistachio baklava or rose-water lokum as an edible souvenir before your next flight.
The airport is ~35km from the city center. With a 6+ hour layover and the right visa, Istanbul's iconic sights are absolutely reachable. Plan carefully — traffic can be unpredictable.
Visit the official Turkish e-Visa portal before travel. Many nationalities can obtain an e-Visa in minutes. Others may qualify for visa-on-arrival. Airside transit requires no visa for most.
The M11 metro line connects IST directly to Gayrettepe in roughly 35–40 minutes for about ₺90. Change to the M2 metro for Taksim Square and central Istanbul. Cheapest and often fastest option.
Havaist buses depart frequently to Taksim, Kadıköy, and other city centers. Approximately ₺110–130. Comfortable with luggage but subject to traffic — add 30 extra minutes buffer.
Metered official taxis from the designated stand. Expect ₺500–700+ to central Istanbul. BiTaksi is the local app — useful for upfront pricing. Avoid unmetered touts inside the terminal.
Allow at minimum 3 hours to return, requeue at security, and reach your gate. Istanbul's security can have long lines at peak times. Build in extra buffer — always.

Allow 20–30 minutes to walk between distant gates. Check the gate display as soon as you land — gates can be very far apart.
IST has charging stations throughout the terminal. Turkey uses Type F (Schuko) sockets — bring a universal adapter or use the USB charging posts.
The Grand Bazaar-inspired duty-free is legitimately impressive — Turkish delight, spices, textiles, and jewelry alongside premium brands.
Multiple well-maintained prayer rooms (musalla) are located on every level. This is one of the most thoughtfully equipped airports for Muslim travelers.
Yotel operates within the terminal (airside). Alternatively, the TGS lounge offers pay-in access with rest areas for non-business passengers.
Get Turkish Lira from ATMs (better rates than exchange desks). Free Wi-Fi requires registration — have your passport handy for the SMS verification.
Turkish Airlines officially offers complimentary guided city tours for long-haul TK passengers with layovers over 6 hours. Ask at the transfer desk upon arrival.
Istanbul traffic can be severe — especially during rush hours (7–10am, 5–8pm). Always add a full extra hour to your return-to-airport estimate.
