Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX) is the primary gateway to Southern California, serving more than 70 airlines with nonstop service to over 100 domestic and international destinations. Its horseshoe-shaped road system and nine terminals can feel chaotic — but once you know the layout, it's manageable. LAX underwent significant modernization starting in the 2010s, and the $5.5B terminal connector (APM people-mover) is transforming how passengers get between concourses.

International passengers arriving at TBIT clear customs there. Domestic connections use the standard terminal ring. Allow 90 min+ for international-to-domestic connections.

LAX's nine terminals are arranged in a horseshoe with the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at the center. Terminals 1–8 handle domestic and some international flights; TBIT is the hub for most international carriers. Inter-terminal transfer on foot is possible post-security within certain terminal pairings — otherwise use the free shuttle or the new APM connector.

The Automated People Mover connects terminals to a new rental-car facility and the Metro K Line. Landside only — you'll re-clear security after re-entry.
Free shuttles depart every 12–20 min on the upper (departures) level from each terminal. Fastest for airside-to-airside if your terminals aren't post-security connected.
Metro K Line connects via FlyAway Bus to the Aviation/LAX station. $3.50 flat fare; reaches downtown in ~45 min. Uber/Lyft pick-up is at LAX-it lot.
LAX has a solid selection of airline and independent lounges. Priority Pass and Capital One Lounges provide pay-per-visit or card-member access — a great option if your airline doesn't include lounge access.

If you have 4+ hours to spare (and confidence re-clearing security), Los Angeles is one of the most rewarding cities in the world to explore on a layover. The beach is minutes away; cultural icons are within 30 minutes. Traffic is the only caveat — plan around it with the times below.
The closest beaches to LAX — just 5–10 minutes by rideshare. Walk the strand, dip your feet in the Pacific, and grab fish tacos on the pier. A quintessential LA experience.

Rent an e-bike and ride the flat Ballona Creek bike path from Culver City to the beach. Scenic wetlands, good coffee nearby, and totally off-the-tourist-trail.
LA traffic is infamous. Avoid leaving the airport between 4–7pm on weekdays. Mornings before 9am and midday slots are your friend for any city excursion.
For layovers under 8 hours, Uber or Lyft is more efficient. Pick-up is at the designated LAX-it lot — allow 20 min to get there from your terminal via free shuttle.
Allow at least 90 minutes to return to LAX, clear security, and reach your gate — more if flying international. 2 hours is safer on busy travel days.
Use Bounce or Radical Storage apps to find nearby luggage storage in Culver City or El Segundo (~$7–10/bag/day). Frees you to explore without dragging your bags.
LA is largely sunny year-round but June Gloom (May–July mornings) can bring overcast skies. Pack a light layer if you're hitting the beach or any coastal area.
