Changi Airport is a destination in itself — but Singapore's streets, hawker stalls, and skyline are just 30 minutes away. Here's how to use every hour.
At a Glance
Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is a major hub for Asia-Pacific routes, making it one of the world's most common connecting airports. Unlike many transit hubs, Changi places you just 30 minutes by MRT from a world-class city. The airport itself — home to Jewel's indoor waterfall — already justifies a connection. But the real reward is stepping outside into one of Southeast Asia's most walkable, safe, and food-obsessed cities.
Singapore is compact, English-speaking, and built for efficient movement. You don't need a tour guide or a rental car — just a stored-value EZ-Link card and a good appetite.
Changi (SIN) — Terminals 1–4, all connected. Jewel is between T1 and T3.
Most nationalities get 96-hour visa-free access. Always verify your passport.
~30 min by MRT to Marina Bay or Orchard Road. S$2.20 each way.
Hot and humid year-round (28–33°C). Pack light, breathable clothing.

Benefits vary by airline and fare class. Common inclusions:
Check eligibility at the Singapore Airlines or STB website when booking. Must be booked in advance — not available at the airport.

Getting Around
The MRT is Singapore's metro — clean, air-conditioned, and extraordinarily reliable. From Changi Airport, take the East-West Line (Green) directly into the city. The system is bilingual (English throughout) and fully mapped on Google Maps.
Buy an EZ-Link card (S$10 deposit + S$5 credit) at the customer service counter in the airport arrival hall. It works on MRT, buses, and some taxis. Alternatively, contactless Mastercard/Visa works on all MRT gates.

Eat Like a Local
Singapore has one of the world's most exciting food scenes, anchored by hawker centres — open-air food courts where Michelin-quality dishes cost S$4–8. Don't leave without eating at least one bowl of laksa or a plate of Hainanese chicken rice.
Home of Tian Tian Chicken Rice — possibly Singapore's most famous dish. Near Chinatown MRT. Open from 10am daily.
A Victorian cast-iron market turned hawker centre. Don't miss the satay stalls on Boon Tat Street in the evenings.
A local favourite just one MRT stop from Changi. Hokkien mee, carrot cake, and char kway teow at legendary stalls.
Over 280 shops and restaurants across 5 levels. Perfect if you want quality food without leaving the airport precinct.
Before You Go
Allow at least 90 minutes from the city to clear immigration and reach your departure gate. 2 hours is safer.
Each terminal has luggage storage near the arrival halls. Rates start at S$5/bag for 4 hours — book online for a discount.
Singapore is equatorial — heat and humidity are constant. Carry a water bottle and wear moisture-wicking fabrics.
Hawker centres accept cash (SGD) only. ATMs in every terminal give fair rates. Carry S$30–50 for a full half-day out.
Changi's arrivals halls have Singtel, StarHub, and M1 counters. A 3-day data SIM costs ~S$15 and keeps Google Maps running.
Many credit cards and Priority Pass memberships give access to lounges across all terminals. Check before you leave for the city — a lounge shower on return is a game-changer. See our lounge access guide for every method.
